      descent and distribution

Usually is part of a sentence that says "according to the laws of State X for descent and distribution".

Meaning that the state’s rules for who inherits when there is no will applies to the items in that paragraph.

Disadvantages? That might be different people than what others in the family think it should be.

It means the the estate will be distributed to relatives in order of decent.
